The app allows students to rent a page, a chapter, or the whole book for whatever period of time they choose-from an hour to a whole school term. Kyatubu comes from the Swahili word “Kitabu,” which means “book.” Fortunately, students don’t have to buy the entire textbook. Ndungu’s app seeks to combine the inflow of technology to improve education in Kenya. But despite the fact that so many Kenyans have access to the Internet and all its information, the country’s literacy rate stands at about 85 percent. Over 90 percent of the country has access to technology, ranging from smartphones to computers to tablets. Technological penetration is increasing dramatically in Africa, and Kenya is no exception. Seeing this large problem, Ndungu asked his son, Tonee Ndungu - who has experience in technology and entrepreneurship - to help him. And in 2014, on their dining room table, they created Kytabu: an app that can work on any device so students can buy the books they need at a price they can afford.
Textbooks are not commonplace in Kenya, and to order them in bulk often carries extra charges concerning shipping and copyrights. He was able to provide his students with the building space, food and even uniforms but the necessary textbooks were too costly.
